100K Google Wave Invites

Some call Google Wave the next big thing on the Internet while others think that it does not add anything new or exciting to the web. Whatever it is, most users have not had a chance to test Google Wave as Google has closed registration for the service. The Google blog announced yesterday that they will open the service to a new batch of 100.000 users. Registrations on the other hand remain closed and the only way users can grab one of these invites is by being a developer who have been active in the developer preview started in June, being one of the first users who signed up for Google Wave (and offered to give feedback) or by being a select customer of Google Apps.
Best chance for most interested users is therefore if they have filled out the registration form at the Google Wave website back when it was announced for the first time. Everyone else will have to wait just a bit longer before they can experience the service first hand.
Take a look at the video about Google Wave if you have not heard about it before: (it’s long)
Your best bet currently is to signup at the website as soon as possible for a chance to be included in one of the upcoming invitation rounds (it is likely that there will be more or that Google will let users who have registered join eventually).

Gmail outage challenges Google engineers

San Francisco: A disruption to Google's Gmail service frustrated users throughout the world Tuesday and flummoxed engineers at the giant internet company.

Google said the problems started early in the morning and were not resolved until approximately 2330 GMT.

The problem prevented users from accessing Google email and stymied customers who use the popular software to sync their information with the Microsoft Outlook email programme.

In Google's Gmail forum, users claiming to be in Italy, Germany, France and Taiwan, along with users from various states in the US, reported being unable to access Gmail.

The snafu increased concerns about the safety and integrity of online data as more computer users migrate to using popular internet services offered by the likes of Google, Facebook and Microsoft.

Google is the third-most popular online email service in the US after Yahoo and Microsoft's Hotmail. The service suffered outages in February and previously in April, August and October 2008.

Google has announced a new innovative feature called "Mail Fetcher" that allows Gmail to fetch mail from any of the user's other non Gmail accounts.

With "Mail Fetcher," multiple email account users will find it easier and more convenient to manage all their mails from one place.

The feature needs to be configured before use, and the user needs to follow a few simple steps:

2) Click 'Accounts'
3) Click 'Add another mail account' in the 'Get mail from other
accounts' section
4) Enter full email address oPublish Postf the account/s to be accessed

5) Click 'Next Step'
6) Enter Password (Gmail will populate Username and POP Server fields
when possible, based on email address)
7) Decide on: leaving a copy of retrieved messages on the server;
always using a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail;
labeling incoming messages; and archiving incoming messages
8) Click 'Add Account'
9) Once the account has been added successfully, there is an option

Even More Recent Google Search Results

Ran Geva noticed that Google's date range restrictions have been extended and you can now find web pages indexed by Google less than one minute ago or even less than 10 seconds ago.

(Update. Google doesn't necessarily index web pages as soon as they're published, but the sites that use feeds or sitemaps are indexed pretty fast. With recent advancements like PubSubHubbub that provide real-time notifications for updates, the delay between publishing pages and finding them using Google will be further reduced.)

Click on "show options", select "past 24 hours" and tweak the URL by replacing "tbs=qdr:d" with "tbs=qdr:n" to find pages indexed in the past minute.

Example: a search for [Tiger Woods] restricted to almost real-time results.

The date restriction feature is quite flexible, but you need to know the syntax used by Google's URLs:

tbs=qdr:[name][value]

where [name] can be one of these values: s (second), n (minute), h (hour), d (day), w (week), m (month), y (year), while [value] is a number.

To find the web pages indexed less than 45 seconds ago that include the word "flu", use this URL:

http://www.google.com/search?q=flu&tbs=qdr:s45

Unfortunately, if you restrict the results to very recent web pages, Google shows a small sample and doesn't list all the results.
